Screamin' Jay Hawkins – Spellbound! 1955-1974

 

Jalacy J. "Screamin' Jay" Hawkins (July 18, 1929 – February 12, 2000) was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and actor. Famed chiefly for his powerful, shouting vocal delivery and wildly theatrical performances of songs such as "I Put a Spell on You", he sometimes used macabre props onstage, making him an early pioneer of shock rock.

Although Hawkins was not a major success as a recording artist, his highly theatrical performances from "I Put a Spell on You" onward earned him a steady career as a live performer for decades afterward, and influenced subsequent acts. He opened for Fats Domino, Tiny Grimes and the Rolling Stones. This exposure in turn influenced rock acts such as Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, the Cramps, Screaming Lord Sutch, Black Sabbath, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Arthur Brown, Led Zeppelin, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, and Glenn Danzig. Vox described Hawkins as a "goth icon".

This 2 disc compilation was released in 1990 by Bear Family Records and, as the back cover states, is "everything you need to hear by Screamin' Jay Hawkins in one tasteless, over-the-top set. All original versions."

Sir Douglas Quintet - The Crazy Cajun Recordings

 

The Sir Douglas Quintet was an American rock band formed in San Antonio, Texas in 1964. With their first hits, they were acclaimed in their home state. When their career was established (subsequent to working with Texas record producer Huey Meaux), the band relocated to the West Coast. Their move coincided with the burgeoning San Francisco psychedelic rock scene of the mid 1960s to early 1970s. Overall, the quintet were exponents of good-times music with strong roots in blues and Texas-regional traditions. The band's songs were most noted for the instantly distinguishable organ sound of Augie Meyers' Vox Continental.

From St. Louie To Frisco is the twelfth studio album by Chuck Berry, released in 1968 by Mercury Records. One track on the album, "My Tambourine", is the same tune as Berry's later hit for Chess Records, "My Ding-a-Ling", but with less risque lyrics. The Sir Douglas Quintet backed Berry on parts of this album.

Chuck Berry With The Steve Miller Band – Live At The Fillmore Auditorium - San Francisco

Chuck Berry was backed by the Steve Miller Blues Band (which later became better known as the Steve Miller Band). Berry's second live album, it was released in 1967 by Mercury Records.

The album was re-released on CD by Rebound Records, with three additional tracks, "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl", "Reelin' and Rockin'" and "My Ding-a-Ling". Incorrectly marked as bonus tracks are "Feelin' It" and "It Hurts Me Too", both of which are on the original album. The Rebound reissue omits "Wee Baby Blues", which is on the original album. An earlier CD reissue by Mercury additionally includes "Bring Another Drink" and "Worried Life Blues".

Rolling Stone wrote that "the most interesting cuts are the instrumentals where Berry applies his rock guitar to Chicago blues and the Steve Miller Band comes into the foreground."
